  • What is WeLab Bank?
    • First of all, as our name suggests, we are a bank! WeLab Bank is a virtual bank licensed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. But, we are not your typical bank. We've seamlessly integrated technology into our lives and are redefining how Hong Kong banks should serve you.
  • Why should I care about virtual banks?

    • The virtual bank initiative was developed by the HKMA to promote financial innovation, facilitate financial inclusion and enhance customer experience. In simple English, we're born from an initiative to make banking better for you and the other 7.5 million people of Hong Kong.

      One key difference is that we are built specifically for the digital world of the 21st century. We are literally built from bottom up to live and serve from your mobile phone. We are free of compromises that come from trying to create another channel to deliver a business that was built for the brick and mortar world. That means 99.99% of everything that you need to do, can be done remotely at your leisure from your phone.

      Most importantly, we are regulated by the HKMA based on the same yardstick as any other licensed bank in Hong Kong. Your eligible deposits here are protected by the Deposit Protection Scheme for up to HKD 500,000 just like any other participating bank in Hong Kong.

  • Why doesn't WeLab Bank have branches?
    • Your mobile phone is our physical branch! We believe that we can deliver intuitive and instant banking services without you ever having to set foot into a physical branch. Also, operating branches is very cost intensive and we want to make sure we keep our costs low so we can pass the cost savings directly to you! If you really want to see or talk to us, there are also many other channels where you can find us: we are a group of real humans sitting in a physical office in Hong Kong; you can call our customer service hotline to speak to a WeLab representative; message us through the customer service chat box in our app; or shoot us an email – whichever way you choose, we will be at your service!
  • How can I withdraw my money if you don't have branches?
    • Your account comes with a free WeLab Debit Card, powered by Mastercard and JETCO. It means you can access cash at any of the JETCO ATMs and CIRRUS ATMs in Hong Kong.
  • Are you guys a REAL bank?
    • Just as you are a real human (or so we think – unless AI 🤖 has taken over the world without us knowing), we are a real bank! We have a full banking license, and we will run our business in a prudent manner and in compliance with HKMA supervisory requirements. Your deposits with us are also protected under the Deposit Protection Scheme up to HKD 500,000.
